mannen-bridge-fukagawa-print-mannenbashi
Mannen Bridge Fukagawa Print 'Mannenbashi'

Hokusai print of the Mannen Bridge at Fukagawa, a high arch with Fuji beneath

A bridge like a bow, and the mountain under it. This is Hokusai's view of the Mannen Bridge at Fukagawa in Edo: a high wooden arch springs across the picture with walkers crossing it, boats pass on the blue water beneath, a fisherman sits on a raft, and Fuji is seen small and white in the space under the span, framed by the bridge's curve and the water. It is one of the views where the mountain is caught in a shape.

It is the print for a person who likes a bridge, and this is one of the best in Japanese art.

The name, Mannenbashi, is the Mannen Bridge, the ten-thousand-year bridge of the print's title, and the picture is the view beneath it.

The print is reproduced from the woodblock print on a textured canvas, stretched round a wooden frame with the image wrapping the edges, so it hangs without a frame and without glass. The colours are the print's own: the deep Prussian blue, the cream of the paper, the greens and the rose of the sky. The cartouche with the series title and the artist's signature is printed in the corner, as on the Edo sheet.

Hang it on a single nail at eye level, alone or in a row of three with two others from the series, which is how they look best. It goes above a desk, a sofa or a bed.

The arch is the detail: drawn as a single high curve on tall posts with its railing in a line of small verticals and the walkers on it as dots, it frames the whole picture, and the mountain beneath it is the size of a fingernail. The fisherman on the raft is drawn with his line in the water.

Every print in the collection is photographed on the same wall at the same scale, so the pages compare.

Dust with a soft dry cloth or a brush; do not wet it. Keep it out of direct sun, which fades the blue over years, and away from a radiator, which loosens the canvas.

From across a room it is an arch over blue water. From close the walkers show their hats, the boats their loads, and the mountain its place under the span. It is the print for a hallway and a person who crosses bridges on purpose.

Three sizes: 40 by 60 cm, 50 by 75 cm and 60 by 90 cm. The smallest suits a shelf or a small wall, the middle a desk, the largest a wall on its own. The image is the same in all three.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1055/3386/6332/files/mannen-bridge-fukagawa-print-mannenbashi-1.jpg?v=1790585693
