large-japanese-fan-ogi
Large Japanese Fan 'Ogi'

Large folding fan in plain white, black or gold on dark ribs, sized for dance

Bigger than the others, and plain. This folding fan opens to a wide half-circle in one colour, white, black or gold, edged in a dark line along the top, on ribs of bamboo lacquered dark, with a rivet at the pivot. There is no image; the fan is the colour and the sweep.

It is the largest fan in the collection and the one used for dance, where the size is the point: it reads from the back of a room. Held still it is a plain object; moved, it is the whole gesture.

The name, Ogi, is simply the folding fan, the old word for it, and this one is the fan in its plainest and largest form.

The ribs are split bamboo lacquered dark, heavier than on a small fan, riveted at the pivot with a metal pin, and the leaf is glued to them along their length. The guards are broad, so the fan closes into a solid bar and opens with a snap that can be heard.

Carry it closed, which is a bar the length of a forearm, and open it with a wrist. It is the fan for a dance costume, a kimono at a performance, or a wall, opened flat and hung; it is too large to disappear into an obi.

The dark line along the edge of the leaf is what separates it from a paper fan for a shop counter: it frames the sweep. The white version reads as light, the black as absence, and the gold as a wall of it; the ribs are the same dark lacquer on all three.

The three colours are three uses: the white for a dance and a summer, the black for a formal kimono and a stage, the gold for a wall or a photograph. The dark ribs suit all three.

Every fan in the collection is photographed open on the same pale ground at the same scale, so the pages compare with each other: the large fan is large, the others are the size of a hand and a half. The photograph shows the printed face; the reverse is plain.

Keep it dry; a wet leaf marks and a wet rib warps. Open it fully before you fold it, so the pleats find their creases, and store it closed. It does not need anything else.

From across a room it is a half-circle of one colour on dark ribs. From close the leaf shows its pleats, the edge its line, and the ribs their lacquer. It is the fan for a dance, a stage or a wall.
