dragon-inlay-band-ring-zogan
Dragon Inlay Band Ring 'Zogan'

Steel band ring inlaid with a dragon scroll, in black, blue, silver or gold

A strip of dragon down the middle of a plain band. This ring is a bevelled steel band with an inlaid channel round its centre carrying a scrolling dragon pattern, in a choice of ground: black with silver scroll, blue with gold scroll, silver on silver, or gold on gold. The bevels are polished, the inlay is flush, and the ring is smooth to the touch all the way round.

It is the quietest of the dragon rings in the collection and the one that fits under a glove, and the blue-and-gold version is the one that looks like something else from a distance.

The name, Zogan, is inlay, the craft of setting one metal into another, and the ring is named for how it is made.

The band is stainless steel, about 8 mm wide, with a channel cut round the centre and the patterned strip set into it flush. The four versions are the same ring with a different strip.

Wear it on any finger of either hand; it is the width and weight of a wedding band and it sits like one. It goes on its own or stacked.

The dragon in the strip is drawn as a scroll, a repeating body with a head at intervals, in the manner of a Celtic knot crossed with a Chinese border. It reads as a pattern rather than a creature, which is why it can be worn everywhere.

From across a table it is a steel band with a coloured line. From close the strip shows its scroll, the bevels their polish, and the inlay its flush edge. It is the ring for someone who wants the dragon and wants it quiet.

Every ring in the collection is photographed on the same pale ground at the same scale, so the pages compare with each other: what looks big here is big on the hand. The measurements given are taken across the face, not round the finger.

Steel does not tarnish, does not turn a finger green and does not mind water, so this ring can be worn in the shower and the sea and wiped dry after. A soft cloth is all the care it needs; the darkened recesses are a finish, not dirt, and they stay.

Sizes are given as the inside circumference in millimetres: 52, 54, 55, 57, 59, 62, 65, 68, 70. Wrap a strip of paper round the finger where the ring will sit, mark where it meets, and measure the strip flat. If you are between two sizes and the ring is wide, take the larger; a wide band needs more room than a thin one.

YONAKU
52 /
