On the chest, a white tiger leaps from the right and a grey dragon coils from the left, with cherry blossom falling between them. On the back, a red phoenix spreads its wings over the whole width of the jacket, with a dragon and a snake tangled beneath it in grey and pink blossom scattered round, all in embroidery so dense the black satin shows only as a ground. The sleeves are cream in the photograph; the other version has them in dark red.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt is the fullest of the sukajan in the range and the one that carries the most animals, which on a jacket made for sailors to bring home from Japan was always the point: the more on the back, the better the story.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe name, Owashi, is the great eagle, the bird the red phoenix on the back is drawn like, wings back and diving.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEvery motif is embroidered, not printed, in dense satin stitch that stands off the cloth and catches the light differently as you move; that is the whole point of a sukajan, and it is the reason the jacket weighs what it does. The body is a satin blend with a soft sheen and a light quilted lining, and the collar, cuffs and hem are a ribbed knit, which is the construction the sukajan has had since the first ones were sewn for American sailors in Yokosuka in the late forties. It zips at the front and has a slash pocket at each hip. It washes cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle, and dries flat.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWear it over a white tee and white trousers, as in the photograph, and let the front do the talking until you turn round. Nothing else with a pattern; the jacket has used all of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFrom across a street it is a black bomber with pale sleeves and a lot of colour on the back. From close every scale on the dragon and every feather on the bird is a separate stitch, and the blossom has its stamens. It is the sukajan to buy when you want the one everyone photographs.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe sleeves are set in raglan, so the embroidery on the shoulders runs unbroken from the body onto the arm, and the animals on the chest are placed high, where the jacket sits open. Zipped to the collar it is a different jacket, all back and a tiger at the throat.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSizes run from M to 3XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual.
