Every square is a traditional pattern that has been on Japanese cloth for centuries, and together they read like a sampler. On black, the indigo squares sit a shade lighter than the body, so the band shows as a band, and the white in the patterns shows as light.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe name, Tsugihagi, means patchwork, cloth pieced from scraps, and the design is honest about it: this is an homage to the mended coats of farmers and fishermen, printed rather than pieced, on a jacket you can wash.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe band is printed, not sewn from patches, and printed at a resolution that keeps the smallest dot of the smallest pattern legible. The cloth is polyester with a matte, dry hand, chosen because black must stay black and because a warm-weather layer should sit lightly. Over a white tee, the white runs between the two halves of the band and the indigo squares frame it.
